My name is Erik Straker. I’m 39 years old, and I live in Western Maryland. I have two years of film school under my belt from the Academy of Art University in San Francisco (major in screenwriting), and I am a brand new author. My first book, INCANTATIONS, is out NOW. My second book, a werewolf horror novella called SHIFT, will be out in October of 2017. I also currently have a collection of dark poetry on Amazon — FAIRY TALE DESTRUCTION. I am constantly working on new short stories and fleshing out new ideas for future series and projects.
When I’m not writing, I can be found reading, watching movies, or playing catch-up with a television series. Even though most of what I write is dark fiction and horror-based, I am a fan of almost every genre. I am a huge superhero nerd and can enjoy most popcorn action flicks and novels. I also enjoy comedies and young adult fiction. I think I find myself writing more about the darker things because I find it cathartic. Writing is my way of dealing with the demons and fears inside of myself. And I genuinely love the horror genre. Horror fans are the best.
Some of my favorite authors are Stephen King, Clive Barker, Anne Rice, Chuck Palahniuk, Neil Gaiman, Frank Miller, Richard Matheson, and Darren Shan. I tend to read a lot of nonfiction books as well. Mostly on writing or screenwriting as I’m always looking for ways to get better at what I do.
I love watching great movies, but television shows done well really draw me in — which is why I love the serial form so much. It gives you a chance to fall in love with the characters and with the storylines. The sad part is I’m always playing catch-up with great shows and have a list of shows that I really need/want to watch. Some of the recent ones that I’ve been watching and that have been awesome have been Game of Thrones, The Flash, Supernatural, Vampire Diaries, True Blood, Teen Wolf, Arrow, and The Walking Dead. Since I’m such a superhero (and very much a Superman) geek, Smallville will always be one of my favorite shows ever. True to my darker roots, Twin Peaks hold a very special place in my heart. My pick for number one television show ever to blow me away has to be Six Feet Under. That show was dark, it was funny, it was tragic. I fucking loved it. I still do.
My movie list is way too extensive to figure out. Let’s just say I like a bit of everything. I love a decent summer blockbuster, a good superhero flick, and a fucking scary horror movie. I love it all, B-movies included.
I’m lucky to get to do what I do. I hope you all keep reading, and I promise to keep writing. Trust me, the dark dreams never stop and there’s no shortage of demons to wrestle with over here. It’s both my curse and my gift.
